NSW: Man shelters in sea cave after swept to sea

A 56-year-old man has spent the night exhausted and shivering in a sea cave at a Sydney
beach after battling against an ocean current for four hours.

A spokesman for the Westpac rescue helicopter says the man swam into the water at Coogee
Beach late last night to escape a group of men who had been chasing him.

Strong currents swept him to sea and he spent four hours trying to swim against them
in a frantic bid to get back to the beach.

He finally reached shore and managed to scramble up rocks and into a sea cave.

Exhausted and cold, the man stayed in the cave all night, unable to get off a narrow ledge.

He was spotted this morning and later winched off by the Westpac helicopter and taken
to Prince of Wales Hospital where he was treated for hypothermia, cuts and abrasions.
