Fed: Aust travellers warned to take care in Britain

CANBERRA, Feb 13 AAP - Australians visiting the United Kingdom were today warned tobe on the alert against terror attacks as a security clampdown in Britain moved into athird day.

Soldiers and armed security guards are on alert at British airports and around Londonafter the British government warned the country faced a terror attack on the scale ofSeptember 11.

Newspapers said police were racing against time to find an al-Qaeda missile gang threateningto shoot down a plane days after troops were called in to protect Heathrow, the country'sbiggest airport.

With thousands of Australians visiting and living in London, the Department of ForeignAffairs and Trade warned travellers to be especially alert.

"In view of the ongoing risk of terrorist attacks, key United Kingdom installationssuch as economic interests, ports of entry and airports remain on heightened alert," thedepartment said.

It also warned travellers could be refused entry upon arrival in Britain if they failedto meet visa rules amid the clampdown.
