INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS
8 February 2011 -- Marks and Spencer (LON:MKS), or M&S, has hired Laura Wade-Gery, the head of Tesco's (LON:TSCO) online business, to oversee its GBP1bn (USD1.6bn/EUR1.2bn) strategy to boost its e- commerce performance, the Financial Times reported.
Wade-Gery will leave her post at Tesco and join M&S as executive director of e-commerce this summer.
The appointment is part of a wider strategy announced last November by Marc Bolland, M&S's chief executive, who said that online sales should grow from GBP400m to between GBP800m and GBP1bn by fiscal 2013/14.
Wade-Gery was largely responsible for the 16% rise in annual online sales at Tesco to GBP1.2bn.
She will be replaced by Ken Towle, chief executive of Tesco's Chinese branch, who will become director of Internet retailing and will oversee the expansion of online retailing across Tesco's operations abroad.

Qld: Ombudsman asked to investigate Torres Strait nurse scandal
BRISBANE, April 7 AAP - The Queensland opposition has asked the state ombudsman to
investigate the government's handling of the Torres Strait nursing scandal.
The move follows revelations a cabinet colleague of state Health Minister Stephen Robertson
will decide whether he or other Queensland Health staff will be charged over the affair.
The minister and his department have come under fire for ignoring damning security
reports into Torres Strait health facilities before a nurse was raped by an intruder at
Mabuiag Island in February.
Opposition health spokesman John-Paul Langbroek today said Queenslanders could not
have confidence in the outcome of the state government's "Yes Minister" investigation.
The opposition had requested the state's then-chief prosecutor Leanne Clare consider
charging health officials, including Mr Robertson, for breaching their duty of care under
the Workplace Health and Safety Act.
But Ms Clare referred the case to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland.
The matter has since been handballed to Mr Robertson's colleague, Employment and Industrial
Relations Minister John Mickel.
Mr Langbroek said the government's probe was a case of "Caesar judging Caesar".
"Clearly it needs to be investigated by an independent authority," he said.
"Referring this case to the minister for employment and industrial relations is a classic
case of Caesar judging Caesar.
"There is a clear conflict of interest."
Mr Langbroek said he had now referred the matter to Queensland Ombudsman David Bevan.
The ombudsman investigates complaints about the decisions and actions of state and
local government agencies.
However, Mr Langbroek said Mr Bevan had told him he was awaiting the outcome of the
Crime and Misconduct Commission's (CMC) inquiry before considering whether further action
should be taken.
The CMC is determining why Mr Robertson was not told about reports into nurse safety
in the Torres Strait.
Mr Langbroek said he hoped either the CMC or Mr Bevan would investigate potential Workplace
Health and Safety breaches.
"The Bligh government cannot be trusted to make an honest, impartial decision," he said.

NSW: NSW Housing confirms it was working with newborn's family=2
DoCS director-general Neil Shepherd said the two departments had discussed the family's
situation on Monday evening, before the baby was found.
He said the family had not previously been known to DoCS and the only contact they
had was when the family called the department's helpline seeking accommodation on Monday.
He said caseworkers tried to contact the family several times on a provided number
but were told the family had gone shopping.
"We were seeking accommodation for this family. The family did not contact us back,"
Mr Shepherd told Southern Cross Broadcasting today.
"Housing had found accommodation for them Friday, Saturday and Sunday as I understand it.
"The baby's death is not related to anything that either the Department of Community
Services or the department of housing has or has not done in this case."
Dr Shepherd said it was difficult to comment on the circumstances of the case while
the police investigation was under way.
"There are no reports in relation to this baby and we knew nothing about the pregnancy
of this mother," he told ABC Radio.
He said there were interagency guidelines to improve the way departments worked together,
but there were gaps in the system.
The system would never be perfect because departments often didn't know they were holding
information relevant to other bodies, Dr Shepherd said.
"The key is for those families that are most vulnerable to make sure that that information
is transferable," he said.
"There's also some difficulties around the privacy legislation and around the rules
of information sharing in relation to child protection ... we are seeking to address those."
The baby's mother is in Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital and has yet to be questioned.
Police could not say when they would interview her, saying it depended on her condition.

WA: Billions earmarked for power system upgrade
By Andrea Hayward
PERTH, April 22 AAP - More than $3 billion will be poured into upgrading and expanding
Western Australia's electricity network to keep up with continuing strong population growth.
Rural and regional communities have been suffering blackouts due to poor networks and
pole-top fires, being deprived of electricity for up to 36 hours at a time in the state's
south-west and wheatbelt.
WA Energy Minister Francis Logan said 11 new substations, while more than $1.3 billion
would boost the distribution network to cater for record demand growth and improve electricity
supply in Perth and throughout the south-west's electricity grid.
"That will allow us to cope with the amazing growth we've had in WA in the last two
years in the metropolitan area," he said.
"Last year, there were 30,000 new connections to homes, offices and industry."
Under the plan, $93 million will be spent on putting power lines underground to reduce
outages caused by falling trees and bad weather.
Managing director of Western Power, Doug Aberle, said the money would enable the WA
power utility to meet strong demand amid extraordinary economic growth after a period
of under-investment over many years.
"The incredible growth that has occurred in WA has put enormous pressure on the provision
of many services, including electricity," he said.

Tas: Firefighters on edge as conditions sour
HOBART, Dec 21 AAP - A raging inferno that has broken containment lines will have Tasmanian
firefighters on edge today as they battle to control the blaze in the face of extreme
conditions.
The St Marys-Scamander bushfire on Tasmania's north-east coast yesterday breached
containment lines near plantations.
Crews were trying to hold the blaze back as firefighters continued backburning around
the fire's other fronts near Gray and Elephants Pass.
The Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) has declared a total fire ban across the state with
high temperatures, low humidity and strong northerly winds forecast for most areas.
Very high fire danger has been predicted for south-eastern Tasmania, the midlands and
inland parts of the central north.
TFS spokesman Jeff Knight said the fire causing most concern was the St Mary's-Scamander
fire, which is still not contained after destroying 17 homes and burning out more than
28,000 hectares.
"We've still got some concern to the south of the St Mary's fire down to Bicheno,"
Mr Knight said.
"If this fire's going to get away it's going to get away in that area."
Mr Knight said the past few days had been relatively quiet on the fire-fighting front,
allowing crews to gain the upper hand.
"(The fires) have all got control lines around them and we've been doing backburning
to strengthen control lines," he said.
"All the new fires we've had are now extinguished or controlled."
But he said the warmer and windier weather could push the St Mary's fire south along the coast.
Mr Knight said the next two days of hotter conditions will pose a challenge for firefighters
ahead of a cool change expected by Friday.

Vic: Qantas trialling flammable liquid detector
MELBOURNE, Aug 14 AAP - Qantas has trialled a new security device capable of detecting
flammable liquids as part of Australia's efforts to combat terrorism.
The Japanese-made device is able to detect flammable liquids within one to two seconds
without the need to open the bottle or taste its contents.
Security consultant Chris Jacka said the device could be used to prevent fluids capable
of being mixed into liquid explosives being smuggled onto aircraft.
"Back in June, we conducted an initial pilot. It's with Qantas at their domestic terminal
and Qantas is showing some interest in that product and we're about to go through the
next phase of that trial," Mr Jacka told Channel Nine.
"It's certainly an added layer in the security process so, sitting in line with the
X-ray and the metal detector and the explosive trace, this would add another layer of
security and protection ... to minimise the risk of flammable liquids being able to get
onto the aircraft."
Mr Jacka said it was very difficult to say whether the device could prevent a potential
terrorist attack.
"Whilst the security forces are obviously now focusing on liquid explosives and trying
to stop those getting on board, who knows what the next type of security threat is, but
certainly security forces will be doing everything they possibly can now to stop this
threat being able to be put into place."
A Qantas spokesman confirmed the device had been trialled at Sydney Airport and feedback
would be provided to the manufacturer.
No further trials would be undertaken by Qantas, he said.
"Qantas evaluate all emerging security technology that has the potential to augment
existing security measures," the spokesman said.
"We recently trialled a product that is being marketed as a flammable liquid test.
It does not claim to detect liquid explosives.
"Ultimately, the adoption of any new security measures for use in Australia has to
be approved by the Department of Transport and Regional Services (DoTARS)."

Global Telephone Communication, Inc. Selects Sun Microsystems as Hardware Vendor for E-Commerce Platform.
Business Editors
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 11, 2000
Global Telephone Communication, Inc. (OTCBB:GTCI) is pleased to announce that it has selected Sun Microsystems to provide the hardware platform for its E-commerce joint venture with Szonline (pronounced "S-Z-online", formerly Shenzhen Newsnet), a significant China based ISP (www.szonline.net).
GTCI and Szonline are partnering to create an Internet portal that will provide online business services and value added Network capabilities.
Anthony Sousa, GTCI's Vice President of Operations stated, "We are extremely pleased to be working in conjunction with Sun to build the technical infrastructure for our E-commerce platform. Sun's hardware is known for its scalability, reliability and performance. As GTCI expands with the goal of becoming a significant global Internet communications and E-commerce company, it is reassuring to know that we have the resources of Sun Microsystems supporting our efforts."
According to the China Internet Network Information Center, there were approximately 2 million people in China online at the end of 1998 and nearly 9 million by the end of 1999 (http://www.cnnic.net.cn/e-index.shtml). This market penetration is representative of less than 1% of the population leaving great potential for further expansion in the Asian arena. As the existing infrastructure continues to develop, Asia and China in particular are projected to become the largest market in the world for Internet commerce.
Sousa commented, "Over the next few years, we believe that the provinces that make up China's eastern seaboard and that have the highest level of economic output, greatest foreign investment, and best-developed infrastructure, will begin to mirror the U.S. numbers in regards to percentage of individuals with Internet access. If that happens, we will be looking at a market of approximately 80 million subscribers out of a population of 350 million. With our expertise in Web based Internet technologies, we believe the China market represents explosive potential to companies such as GTCI that are willing to partner with China based organizations to provide value added services. Starting with our free email platform, which will be accessible from anywhere in the world, and which will be launched early in Q4, we will be following up with a variety of Unified Messaging services which will allow individuals to combine voice, fax, and email into a unified mailbox that can be accessed via the telephone or the Internet, and will interact with our Voice over IP (VoIP) network. Subsequent value added applications are slated to further enhance GTCI's products."
GTCI is a global telecommunications corporation with an emphasis on China and the Internet. GTCI currently holds licenses to conduct telecommunications and Internet business in China, and is looking to expand its operations worldwide.
This press release contains statements that may constitute forward-looking statements made pursuant to the safe harbor provisions of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. This information may involve risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results, performance or achievements to differ materially from those anticipated in such forward-looking statements.
