Fed: Migrants need families near them
The federal opposition says moves to attract more skilled migrants to regional Australia
will have little impact if there isn't proper social structures in place.
The government yesterday announced a boost of 6,000 places in the immigration program
for next year -- its biggest increase since coming to office four years ago.
Most of the extra places will go to skilled migrants. The humanitarian program will
remain unchanged at 12,000 places.
Opposition regional affairs spokesman MARTIN FERGUSON has welcomed the government's
move to attract migrants to the regions, but says it will have limited impact unless there
are proper settlement mechanisms.
He says there's no point encouraging more skilled regional migrants if the government
isn't prepared to provide them with proper family and community support services.
