WA: French sailor taken to Perth hospital

Eds: Updates that sailor was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, not Fremantle as earlier reported

FREMANTLE, WA, Dec 22 AAP - The badly injured French sailor rescued by the Australian
navy in high seas off Western Australia has been taken to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment.

HMAS Arunta arrived back in Fremantle on Monday afternoon after the risky rescue of
Yann Elies 850 miles off the WA coast late on Saturday.

A sedated Elies, who broke his leg and ribs during the Vendee Globe solo round-the-world
yacht race late last week, was carried off the frigate in a hoist by six sailors to a
throng of waiting media.

A waiting ambulance took him to Royal Perth Hospital.

The hospital will hold a media conference on Monday afternoon.
